Fundación SES (Sustentabilidad, Educación, Solidaridad) co-organized with The Millennials Movement, Girls, Boys, Adolescents and Youth Group for the LAC regional Civil Society Mechanism ECLAC – MeSCLAC, UNFPA LACRO, and WHO

The pandemic has significantly affected older and younger people in Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) in comparison with other regions, generating new challenges but also new opportunities for age-inclusive response and recovery efforts, and leadership for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the region.

Seizing these opportunities will require combating the stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination that exist against different generations and fostering intergenerational solidarity. Intergenerational approaches will not only ensure all voices are recognized and meaningfully engaged in the advancement of the 2030 Agenda and the policy making processes, but they will also allow countries to benefit from the contributions of people of all ages. These approaches are needed to fulfil the central, transformative promise of the SDGs: Leave no one behind.

This side event will bring different actors that are implementing and promoting intergenerational approaches to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and to advance the 2030 Agenda. During the session we will (1) discuss key barriers to achieve intergenerational solidarity including ageism; (2) illustrate the benefits and importance of intergenerational approaches in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic; and (3) showcase efforts taking place in different sectors and across generations to achieve the SDGs. The session will include an opening segment followed by a panel, an interactive segment with participants, a keynote from the World Health Organization that will focus on the Global Campaign to Combat Ageism, and closing remarks.

The session is co-organized by Fundación Sostenibilidad, Educación, Solidaridad (Fundación SES), The Millennials Movement, the Children, Adolescents and Youth Group for the Latin American and the Caribbean Regional Civil Society Mechanism (MeSCLAC), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Health Organization (WHO).
